Teaspoons to Ounces Converter (tsp to oz)
How to convert teaspoons to ounces
Teaspoons measure volume; ounces measure mass. To convert between them you need the ingredient’s density — because a teaspoon of honey weighs much more than a teaspoon of flour, even though both fill the same spoon.
Step 1 — Know your teaspoon volume
One US teaspoon = exactly 4.92892 mL. A metric teaspoon (UK, Australia, Canada) = 5 mL. This calculator uses the US teaspoon.
Step 2 — Find your ingredient’s density
Density tells you how many grams fit in each millilitre. Water = 1.000 g/mL (the baseline). Dense ingredients like salt and honey give more grams per teaspoon. Light ingredients like flour and cocoa give fewer.
Step 3 — Apply the conversion formula
oz = tsp × 4.92892 × density ÷ 28.3495
Where 4.92892 = mL per US teaspoon · density is in g/mL · 28.3495 = grams per avoirdupois ounce
Example — 3 teaspoons of honey (density 1.42 g/mL):
3 × 4.92892 × 1.42 ÷ 28.3495 = 0.7408 oz
For fluid ounces (volume only, no density needed):
fl oz = tsp × 4.92892 ÷ 29.5735 → 1 tsp = 0.1667 fl oz · 6 tsp = 1 fl oz exactly

Frequently asked questions
How many teaspoons are in an ounce? +
There are approximately 5.745 teaspoons in 1 weight ounce of water. For fluid ounces, there are exactly 6 teaspoons in 1 US fluid ounce. The count varies by ingredient — see the density table above.
How do you convert teaspoons to ounces? +
Formula: oz = tsp × 4.92892 × density ÷ 28.3495
For water: 1 tsp = 1 × 4.92892 × 1.0 ÷ 28.3495 = 0.1739 oz. For fluid ounces: fl oz = tsp ÷ 6
What is 1 teaspoon in ounces? +
1 tsp water = 0.1739 oz (weight) or 0.1667 fl oz. By ingredient: sugar = 0.1469 oz · flour = 0.0919 oz · salt = 0.2116 oz · honey = 0.2469 oz · butter = 0.1584 oz.
How many teaspoons in a fluid ounce? +
Exactly 6 teaspoons = 1 US fluid ounce. (1 fl oz = 29.5735 mL ÷ 4.92892 mL per tsp = 6 exactly.)
Weight ounces vs fluid ounces — what’s the difference? +
Weight oz measures mass. Fluid oz measures volume. For water, 1 fl oz ≈ 1.043 oz. For denser or lighter ingredients the gap grows. US liquid recipes use fl oz; dry goods use weight oz.
How many teaspoons in ¼ oz? +
For water, 0.25 oz ≈ 1.436 teaspoons. Switch the calculator to oz → tsp mode and enter 0.25 for any ingredient.
Is a US teaspoon the same as a metric teaspoon? +
No. US teaspoon = 4.92892 mL. Metric teaspoon = 5 mL. The 1.4% difference matters in precision baking. This calculator uses the US teaspoon.
How many ounces is a teaspoon of salt? +
1 tsp of table salt ≈ 0.2116 oz (6 g). Salt density = 1.217 g/mL, making it heavier per teaspoon than water or most kitchen ingredients.
Why do different recipes give different conversions? +
Because density differs by ingredient. Many online converters assume water density for everything. A tsp of honey weighs 2.7× more than a tsp of flour. This calculator uses ingredient-specific densities from food science databases.
